i finally took some time to conduct my observational study. it’s not too official, just simple
study sessions with a few friends to observe if their actions could relate to their emotions.
are some actions i’ve listed down common actions people did to show off similar emotions? of
course, i had a few perimeters to my study, but i’m also aware that this is also not the most
accurate as it requires one to understand themselves well. it’s an exercise that requires them
to think. there are limitations to this exercise, but it will have to do for this project. i
compiled the results into a table, and then analysed the values. the results were important for
the generation of the visual matrix. i wanted these done so that i had something to show for cid
labs, and i could get some comments on how to connect these ideas together. i had to start
understanding the methods of connecting my ideas together.
i also tried looking into shaders. trust,,,,, i tried!!!! maybe i’m using the wrong platform to
research about shaders, because i thought i would be able to just pluck random shaders from
random people online and experiment with them but i cannot find any!!!!! while doing so though,
i fell into a very appealing rabbit hole which is the world of three.js. i’m aware that to make
three.js sketches look good, shaders are used as well. so in the end, i will still have to
understand shaders. but the three.js works are a very good source of inspiration, i think. or it
will probably lead to my demise. this work in particular, is something very very super close to
what i have in mind.

for cid lab and the grad project consultation this week, i focused on getting the technicalities
to work. i also sketched down some ideas for the prototypes based on the observation results. i
still needed help on understanding the electrical components i need. perhaps having the sketches
will help andreas understand what i wish to do better.
cid lab enquiries:
1. show research and matrix, to help andreas understand
2. ask how to connect together
3. arduino components required
4. making organic shapes in javascript
for defining lack of motivation, switches or buttons can be used, triggered when the
artefact of good posture is no longer in contact. accelerometer can be used to detect speed,
detect when the artefact drops.
organic shapes: beginShape(); curveVertex(); endShape();
showed off three.js, andreas says its like javascript on crack andreas demonstrated shaders. values of the shaders are also able to change. to prepare sketches of artefacts and a black card each for tomorrows grad proj consult

outline in dissertation, and support with technical findings
1. concept
2. techincal implications and requirements
3. form, aesthetics
4. interactivity
5. (cause and effect) use visual materials to illustrate the artefacts
for point 5: look for workflow diagrams
interaction papers usually have many workflow diagrams can refer to cedric bonnet
i’m satisfied with finally carrying out the observational study. it really pushed me to carry out the next steps of the research. also, i got some helpful insights from my participants which was that lack of motivation could not really be measured by the actions they did. or rather, most of them realised that they were not able to express feeling unmotivated. they gave me the feedback to study sitting positions instead. apparently, changes to sitting positions were obvious signs to how motivated one was feeling when they were doing their work. tania was the one who gave me this feedback, and when i brought this up within my participants, they all agreed. this gave me something new to study.
this is just a small detail, but i realised that my project was usually much easier to understand with the help of sketches or just diagrams in general. i should really incorporate this into my grad project.
actually i’ve spent too much time on the project. i do need to write about it in my dissertation, but it’s time i spend a bit more time on my dissertation before continuing to worry about my written work.
